I have copied the following text from the Introduction of my bible: "Making Wood Signs" - Patrick Spielman, Sterling Publishing Co., New York (ISBN 0-8069-8984-X) Apologies to the copyright people, I'm sure the author won't mind the free promotion. |
Signs abound all around us. They direct, locate, restrict, inform, identify, motivate, and sometimes aggravate our daily lives. Signs give us good and bad messages of all sorts. Flickering neon, lighted plastic, and rusting metal signs obscure and cheapen commercial areas across the country. Conversely, wood signs blend in with all environments and offer a desirable change of pace.
The continuing popularity of authentic, well-crafted wood signs is very real, and the reasons are manyfold. Perhaps the major reason is that wood itself has quality of uniqueness and individuality that stands eloquently alone - enduring and "honest". This very quality has led many plastic and metal sign companies to imitate the appearance of wood with artificial graining and texturing. This is not design integrity and we all know it. Authentic wood signs do not give a deceptive impression. Whatever the message of an authentic wood sign, we subconsciously assume that it is said sincerely and honestly. Remember, a sign is your "front door". It gives others their very first impression of your home, business, farm or community.
Wood signs have many other advantages over their offensive plastic and neon counterparts. Wood signs truly blend in with natural environments, trees, foliage, shrubbery, stone or water. Beautiful country landscapes and architecture can be least disturbed by unobtrusive, well executed wood signs. Yet, they delicately and effectively attract the eye because they are each unique.
Wood signs maintain their desired natural appearance for a long time, much longer than other kinds of signs which eventually fade, blister, crack, rust, or literally fall apart. When assembled and finished properly, wood signs become more beautiful with age. Regardless of what most people think, wood signs best endure the turbulent natural elements of moisture, sun's rays, snow, sleet, ice and so on. They also best resist vandalism. As wood signs get older, they impart an impression of endurance, long establishment and permanence.
